Lecturer in Catholic Studies

Dear Parishioners,

To prepare Advent and to welcome Jesus Christ our Lord coming soon, you are invited to attend a lecture on December 17, 2021 at 6:00 PM before Mass and Adoration.

The lecture will be held by Father Scott M. Lewis S.J., Lecturer in Catholic Studies at Campion College at the University of Regina.

Please come and attend this event at St. Joseph in Balgonie.

St. Agnes CWL Project

The CWL is asking for your support with a project they are undertaking for the month of November.

The NEIGHBOUR PROJECT, spearheaded by St. Anne’s Parish, aids families referred to them by Catholic Family Services.  Some of these families are new immigrants and some just need a helping hand.  In addition to household goods, they also have begun supplying food items.

We are specifically collecting protein food items to pass along to them. Dried and canned beans and legumes, canned meats and fish, canned stews and chillis and peanut butter.

There is a shelf at the entrance to the church for your donations along with a list of items we are asking for.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

We will be collecting these items until the end of November. Should you have any questions call on any one of the CWL members.  THANK YOU.

Visitation House

Visitation House is a drop-in center for women and children. It is a safe place where women and children can gather for prayerful reflection, support, and a helping hand when needed. They offer a meal to share, a listening ear, and a guiding hand. They ask for your support again this year.

Pat Laturnas will be collecting donations after mass, and will be doing so after each mass in September.

Please consider donating to this very worthy cause.

Guidelines for St. Agnes Parish effective Sepember 17, 2021

As the COVID infection rate rises in Saskatchewan, yesterday the Government announced new public health orders. The details affecting places of worship are as follows:

Mandatory mask order

Effective today, Friday, September 17, masks must be worn in every indoor public space. This means that places of worship will need to ensure that all attending are wearing masks.

Masking exemptions can be found on the Public Health Order. The following would apply in places of worship:

    • 4(c)(i) Individuals aged two and under;
    • 4(c)(ii) Individuals aged three to twelve who are not reasonably able to wear a face covering;
    • 4(c)(iii) Subject to subsection (g), individuals who, in the determination of a health professional, are unable to wear a face covering due to a particular medical condition and have received written confirmation of same in accordance with subsection (f);
    • 4(c)(iv) Individuals who, due to cognitive impairment, an intellectual disability, or a severe mental health condition, are unable to understand the requirement;
    • 4(c)(vi) Individuals who are leading a service, ceremony, or other public event while speaking from a podium, lectern, platform, stage, desk or other standing or seating area dedicated to speaking, but only when the individual can maintain a distance of three metres from other individuals;
    • 4(c)(vii) Individuals playing a woodwind, brass, or other instrument operated by breath, but only if they can maintain a distance of three metres from other individuals, as measured from the mouth or opening/bell end of the instrument, whichever is closest, to another individual while playing;

Individuals may remove their mask briefly in order to consume the eucharist.

Proof of vaccination:

Places of worship are exempt from the proof of vaccination policy.

In summary:

Please continue to be cautious and prudent. Encourage regular hand sanitizing. Physical distancing is not required but is encouraged. Physical touching (shaking hands, hugging, etc…) is discouraged. There are no indications yet whether there will be limits on serving food or beverages in places of worship.

Guidelines for St. Agnes Parish effective July 11, 2021

The province will be removing all public health restrictions effective July 11, 2021. Even when all the public health restrictions are removed, everyone will have their own level of comfort with the changes.

We have received some guidelines from the Archdiocese to follow as fitting for our parish. The following will be the guidelines for St. Agnes Parish effective July 11th:

– The faithful continue to be dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation until September 1, 2021.

– Hand sanitizing will still be required upon entering the church and hand sanitizers will be available. If you wish you may bring your own hand sanitizer.

– The use of Holy water fonts will be restored.

– The Sign of Peace by shaking hands may resume if you choose and others are comfortable. The Sign of Peace may also be expressed with a bow or similar ritual gesture.

– Choirs and congregational singing may resume. Individuals who are not comfortable singing are welcome to wear a mask. Hymn books will be available on the back pew for anyone wishing to sing.

– The collection of financial donations remains unchanged for now. A collection basket will remain on the table at the back of the church.

– Reception of Communion will continue and hand sanitizers will continue to be used but reception of the Blood of Christ will not resume at this time.

– Masking is not required. If you wish to wear masks based on your own risk assessment and comfort level, you are welcome to do so. Individuals with symptoms that don’t require staying at home are encouraged to wear masks when attending mass.

– Pre-registering for masses will no longer be required.

– Physical distancing will be implemented in stages. Right now the church is using every third row of pews. Every second row of pews will be used effective July 11th. Pews available for use will be marked. If there are more families than pews, and if other parishioners are comfortable, you may sit together.

– The church will continue to be cleaned on a regular basis. Disinfecting pews after each mass will no longer be required.

Stage 3 Guidelines for Parishes

Once Stage 3 of Saskatchewan’s Re-Opening Roadmap comes fully into effect on July 11, 2021, all public health restrictions will be removed, including gathering sizes and mandatory masking. Even when all public health restrictions are removed, everyone will have their own level of comfort with these changes. The following guidelines are offered for pastors and parish staff and volunteers to assist with the review of current practices as they discern the return to pre-pandemic local practices as of, or after, July 11th. Keep in mind that some government restrictions could return if case numbers grow again. Having the ability to be flexible on changes for the coming months would be prudent to consider in your plans.

Providing a welcoming, non-judgmental atmosphere for all will be an important part of making changes in parishes. This is an important time to use the consultative structures in your parish. Once decisions are made at a parish level, please communicate clearly what restrictions are being kept, which ones are ending, and which ones are being phased out. These will likely need to be repeated throughout the coming months as parishioners return.

Two updates to the Guidelines for Places of Worship

  1. The Public Health Order has been extended to March 19th. The revised Health Order has not changed the general restrictions covering all parts of Saskatchewan. The number of people allowed to gather remains the same as it has been since December 17, 2020.
  2. The specific guidelines for Places of Worship have had additions to clarify a couple of issues.

a) Contact Tracing. Since June 2020, public buildings (including places of worship) have been required to collect contact details for all people entering their facility. The following bullet points have been added to the guidelines to clarify matters.

  • For the purposes of contact tracing, places of worship are required to collect and maintain a list of people that are present within their facilities for any purposes. Contact details must include date, time, name, address, and phone number or email address.
  • When collecting contact details, avoid the sharing of pens or other common touch instruments unless disinfected between each use.
  • Contact registration lists must be maintained confidentially by the place of worship and destroyed after 30 days.

Contact tracing is required at all times. This includes anyone entering the building. Delivery persons are not generally required to provide contact details because of their short duration. Do not forget to include staff, volunteers, and tradespeople on these lists.

Confidentiality of the contact details is essential. Remember that provincial privacy laws apply to membership lists and other personal data collected by faith communities. One person registering shouldn’t be able to see the names and contact information for others also registering.

b) Non-ceremonial gatherings. A number of questions have been forwarded to the government as a result of one bullet point that reads: “These guidelines do not apply to receptions or non-ceremonial gatherings.” Faith communities have asked about gatherings that have a religious purpose but are not ceremonial, such as a scripture study or religious instruction. Others have asked about congregational meetings such as a Pastoral Council Meeting or the Annual General Meeting. The following bullet points have been added to permit such gatherings.

  • Non-ceremonial meetings are permitted in groups no larger than 30 as long as physical distancing can be maintained.
  • No food or beverage is allowed.
  • No concurrent meetings or meetings taking place at the same time as worship services.
  • Allow enough time for entry and exit, as well as cleaning and disinfection
  • Seating must be arranged so that two metres of physical distancing can be maintained between non-household gatherings.
  • Attendees to remain seated except for entering and exiting, as well as using the washroom.

The requirement to stay seated is intended to reduce the risk of breaking the physical distancing requirements.

The restriction on a meeting at the same time as a worship service in another part of the facility is intended to be consistent with the existing ban on concurrent worship services.

All guidelines for worship gatherings will also be applicable to these non-ceremonial meetings: masks are required, 2 metre distancing is to be maintained at all times, contact tracing is required, hands and physical surfaces should be sanitized regularly. Do not share common use items such as pens, paper, hymnals, microphones, etc..
